This year he was selected for the main competition with theunique Tropical Malady. Weerasethakul’s work is the first Thai film ever toappear in competition
“Tropical Malady is about my attraction to virgin landscapes and mystery. It’s a song to love and darkness,” says the director. The film, a love storybetween a young soldier and a country boy, is made up of two distincthalves. The second half takes place in the jungle, showing a chase betweenthe two men that seems to take the form of a search for identity. Realismand dreams mix in this enchanting work that looks at the memory of beingloved and the demons we carry inside us.”
“To help director Apichatpong Weerasethakul answer questions from theinternational press about his film Tropical Malady, screening incompetition, he brought along the actor Sakda Kaewbuadee and producers Charles de Meaux et Pantham Thongsang.
Apichatpong Weerasethakul on homosexuality: “I don’t think it’s easy to begay, in Thailand as much as elsewhere. Inside each of us, there are hiddenanimal instincts that society forces us to hide - homosexuality is anexample of that. I think we have to free ourselves of constraints and acceptwho we are.”
Apichatpong Weerasethakul on his influences: “I love Andy Warhol, not onlyhis films, but also his vision of the world. I also like Marcel Duchamp andI feel very close to the world of experimental American filmmaker Bruce Baillie.”
