The quality of the land is degenerating and if anything would to happen to her husband, there would be real problems. Their existence is entirely dependent on the twice-yearly rice harvest. One day, Poeuv is poisoned by a thorn in his foot and dies. The cycle of life is suddenly off its track.
» Ramatou/Hyenas, Djibril Diop Mambéty, SENEGAL, 1992 110′
Colobane, a once idyllic village, has been sliding into terrible poverty for a number of years. The village fathers are hocking the town hall’s furnishings to pay their debts. One day word arrives of the return of a woman who once was courted by the grocer. The local beauty had departed long ago. Now she returns as a grand lady. Hoping that the returning Linguere will be generous and help the impoverished town out of its financial hardship, the residents put on their finest clothes and declare Dramaan the next mayor. They send him out to romance the woman, since he once courted her. In fact, she is returning to the village with the intention of sharing her millions to help her people. But she wants something in return – revenge. She wants the villagers to kill the grocer because he impregnated her as a teenager and refused to confess being the father of her child.
Although initially outraged, the villagers are easily seduced by goods Linguere offers them.
