Werner Herzog (rojen W.H. Stipetic) se je rodil leta 1942 v Münchnu. Odraščal je v zakotni gorski vasici na Bavarskem, nato pa v Münchnu in Pittsburghu študiral zgodovino in nemško književnost. Leta 1961 je star 19 let posnel svoj prvi film. Od takrat se je kot producent, scenarist in režiser podpisal pod več kot štirideset filmov, med katerimi so Aguirre, srd božji (1972), Nosferatu (1978), Fitzcarraldo (1982), Lekcije teme (1992) in Moj najljubši sovražnik (1999). Napisal je številna leposlovna dela in režiral prav toliko oper. Werner Herzog živi v Münchnu in Los Angelesu.
